One hundred and nine years ago, 13 women united to form the Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase. The WCCC has evolved and adapted ever since! Some changes were rapid. Holding meetings by Zoom, making masks, and meeting outdoors became normal very quickly in 2020. Other adjustments crept in over time. We no longer wear hats and gloves, except for our haunted house. We no longer hold tea parties, except for our annual Cherry Blossom Tea. We no longer limit membership to Chevy Chase. And we no longer refer to each other by our husband’s names, we are Barbara and Caitlin and Mickey and Grace.
The 1913 members would find themselves at home with the current uniting purposes of the WCCC. Community service and scholarship remains a central focus, with over $150,000 donated to students and nonprofit organizations this year. Thousands of volunteer hours from members supports our communities as well, as we collect and cook and coordinate and support nonprofits throughout the area.
Interest groups and events provide ample opportunity for friendship through activity at the WCCC. Bridge, music, and the love of good literature are our constants. International Affairs and the Garden Section balance Happy Hours, Game Nights, and Preakness parties. Members support club wide events such as Art Show, Mystery Mansion, and Lunch with Santa.
Almost half of our members prefer evening events as they balance work, family, and other volunteer commitments. Many members have retired from demanding careers and now explore new interests at their own pace. The WCCC helps members thrive with social, community, and educational opportunities.
We look forward to continual change with a nod to the past and hope you will join us in the future!
